Local Teachers Attend Seminar

Several area educators recently participated in seminars at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching.

Rae A. Irvine of Southern Pines, who teaches exploring technology systems at Southern Middle School, attended a seminar entitled “The Rainforest and Story of Chocolate” held May 2 through 6.

Leticia Garcia of Vass, who teaches English as a second language teacher to kindergartners through ninth-graders at Holbrook Elementary School, attended a seminar called “Rainbows and Tornadoes: Nature’s Beauty and Fury,” held May 9 through 13.

Two Southern Pines teachers attended a seminar entitled “The Ecology of Barrier Islands” held May 9 through 13 in Salter Path. They are: Colleen B. Buchholz, who teaches physical education at Pinehurst Elementary School; and John F. Buchholz, who teaches health at Pinecrest High School.

NCCAT provides residential seminars in the arts, sciences, humanities and technology for pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade public school teachers.

The seminars are offered on a year-round basis at no cost to participating teachers. They are designed to renew teachers’ vitality for teaching and to equip them with new knowledge for the classroom. Mary McDuffie is center director.

More information about NCCAT seminars is available by calling toll-free (800) 922-0482 or online at www.nccat.org.
