Southern Pines Holds Massive Litter Cleanup

A massive litter cleanup was conducted throughout Southern Pines on Saturday, June 4, in preparation for this week’s U.S. Open golf championship in Pinehurst.

The cleanup effort was part of a greater countywide campaign under the auspices of Keep Moore County Beautiful.

The Southern Pines phase of the operation was under the direction of Tom Worth, a longtime member of the town’s Appearance Commission. Greg Zywocinski, another member of the commission, assisted Worth.

Employees of the town’s Recreation and Parks Department, headed by Greg Davis, participated in the cleanup. Davis coordinated many of the activities.

Numerous civic groups, several Adopt-a-Highway organizations and many individual volunteers, including Mayor Frank Quis and several menbers of the Town Council, also participated.

The cleanup was held from 8 a.m. until noon, ending at the Downtown Park. The Recreation and Parks Department provided a free lunch of pizza for all the volunteers.
