Randolph Arts Guild Presents Summer Classes
Randolph Arts Guild in Asheboro presents a listing of its summer arts camps.
The following classes need a minimum of 10 students. The cost is $60 for members of the Guild and $70 for non-members. Students are asked to bring a snack from home; drinks will be provided, said a spokesman.
June 13-17, 9 a.m. to noon, The Art of Eric Carle taught by Gail Dubis. Experience the art style of Eric Carle, noted children’s book author and illustrator. His books, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “The Very Busy Spider,” will come alive as students make art painted tissue papers that will be used in creating a finished collage. Grades K-5.
June 20-24 9 a.m. to noon, Beginning Basket Weaving taught by Mary Ellen Robinson, Students will make three to four large baskets. These handmade baskets will be functional and useful for everyone. The second basket will be made entirely of raw, natural materials such as grapevine and willow. One basket will be made from a wood base with natural dyed reed. The last basket will be a large egg basket, using both grapevine and flat reed. Grades 1-5.
June 27-July 1, 9 a.m. to noon, Journey Through Central and South America with Cori Cagle. Create an original sawdust carpet from Guatemala called an Alfombra as well as a Cuna-inspired felt Mola. Grades K-5.
Shorter Classes
These classes range from one to three days and need a minimum of eight students to proceed.
n June 18, storytelling class with Janet Harllee and Betty Foust. (Time and fee to be determined.)
June 21, 1 to 3:30 p.m., silk painting with Cori Cagle. Learn the history as well as surface applications while spending an afternoon creating an original silk painted hoop. Ages 7-12. Members $50, Non-members $60.
July 11 and July 15, Stained Glass Mosaic Vase with Stephanie Soper. Provide a glass vase and convert it to stained glass. Other supplies furnished. Seventh grade and up. Members $45, Non-members $55.
July 12-14, Linocuts from Photos with Stephanie Soper. Create a lineoleum “print” from a favorite photograph or a photo taken in class. All materials provided. Subjects that work well are landscapes, animals, buildings. Seventh grade and up. (Time to be announced.) Members $50, Non-members $60.
July 18-19 and July 22 Small Scale Ceramic Baskets with Stephanie Soper. Create small decorative baskets out of clay. Using leaves, doilies, fabric to give texture to clay slabs. The slabs, combined with coil building, will create the delicate baskets. Fifth grade and up. (Time to be announced.) Members $50, Non-members $60.
July 26-27 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., Still Life Drawing with Gail Dubis. Compose from a still life setup. Use different materials — watercolor, oil pastels, crayon and black ink. Finished pieces to take home. Grades 4 and 5. Members $45, Non-members $55.
Aug. 2 and 3, 12:30-4:30 p.m.,Drawing Faces with Gail Dubis. Learn to draw the face realistically using proven skills. Pencil, charcoal, and scratch art will be used. Supplies are included. Grades 4 and 5. Members $45, Non-Members $55.
