Contrary to what Andy Cagle may believe, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is not campaigning against KFC because the company kills chickens. PETA is asking KFC to take steps to end the most egregious cruelty to animals in the chicken industry.
KFC’s suppliers slit open the throats of conscious animals and often scald them alive, chop the beaks off baby chicks, and drug their chickens with antibiotics to keep them alive through conditions that would otherwise kill them.
However one feels about eating meat, decent people will agree that, at a minimum, animals should not be grossly mistreated. PETA has recommendations to eliminate the worst abuses of chickens, all of which were devised by and are supported by members of KFC’s farmed animal welfare panel.
These improvements are minimal, though they will make a world of difference to the animals. Interested individuals can find more information at KentuckyFriedCruelty.com.
