Rest of the Story

I just can’t resist this addendum to my recent letter (May 21) concerning Elizabeth Morrison Barron — her tragic death from cancer, and her spiritual relationship with a hawk, which circled her house during her last days — a letter which you graciously complimented.

Elizabeth’s devoted husband, Chuck Barron, organized a wonderfully successful “Eliz-A-Thon,” held on New Hampshire Avenue on June 5. It was a sentimental farewell to Elizabeth, highlighted by a live auction of her works of art and that of other area artists, which raised thousands of dollars for the Elizabeth Morrison Barron scholarship fund at Sandhills Community College.

At the auction, Jody and I sat with Elizabeth’s father, Dr. Maxwell Morrison, and her younger sister, Jeanie.

Suddenly, miraculously, we saw the hawk circling above the gathering. The amazing spirit of nature-loving Elizabeth!

As I raised my arm to point out the hawk, the auctioneer was auctioning a painting by Elizabeth. He assumed my raised arm was a $200 bid increase and up went the price.

We have a hunch Elizabeth was watching.
