Ceremony Sunday to Honor Moore Confederate Soldiers

Ten grandsons of Lewis Phillips Sr. (1764-1844) who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War will be honored Sunday in a 12:30 p.m. ceremony at Fair Promise Methodist Church in Glendon.

Lewis Phillips donated land for the church, the oldest Methodist congregation in Moore County.

The 10 grandsons, who are buried at the church, are Lewis Phillips, John W. Phillips, Allen W. Phillips, Doctor C. Phillips, Charles D. Phillips, Albert R. Phillips and William B. Phillips, all sons of Dabney Phillips Sr. of Moore County; and Malphus S. Phillips, Mastin C. Phillips and Baxter C. Phillips, all sons of Lewis Phillips Jr. of Moore County.

Lewis S. Phillips, Charles D. Phillips, Albert R. Phillips and Mastin C. Phillips all died in the Civil War.

The program Sunday will begin with the playing of “Dixie,” the “Southern national anthem.’ After an opening devotion, Lacy A. Garner Jr. will speak on “In the Shadow of Fair Promise.”

Garner’s speech will be followed by the placing of the Confederate flag, a special salute by Moore County’s “Scottish Riflemen” Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a reading of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s farewell address to the Army of Northern Virginia, the sounding of taps, a closing prayer and the playing, again, of “Dixie.”
