N.C. State Gives Grange Scholarship
The North Carolina State Grange, a rural, civic organization in N.C. since 1929 presented 15 scholarship awards and 12 scholarship awards and 12 scholarship renewals for the 2003-2004 academic year in the amount $1,000 each.
The scholarships were given based on scholastic achievement, community and school involvement as well as participation in local Grange activities.
Matthew Evans from Cameron was honored as one of the Grange scholars. He is a student at North Carolina State University where he is pursuing a degree in political science.
Mabe Inducted
Patsy Sue Mabe of Jackson Springs was recently inducted into Campbell University’s Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Founded at Campbell in 1975, Phi Kappa Phi is one of the most prestigious academic honor societies in the world, comparable to Phi Beta Kappa.
A junior music education major, Mabe is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Her name has appeared on the dean’s list and the president’s list for academic excellence. Mabe was given the North Carolina Community College Academic Excellence Award and the Friends of Music Award. She also received the Presidential Transfer Scholarship and the Moore County Choral Society Scholarship. She is the daughter of Norman Odom and Alice Miller and the wife of Steve Mabe.
Bynum Earns Doctorate
Shirley D. Bynum, the daughter of the late Shirley J. Taylor and the granddaughter of Ada Kelly of Carthage, received a doctorate in curriculum and teaching with a concentration in cultural studies May 16 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
In addition to her doctorate, she received a women’s studies certification and a curriculum specialist license. Bynum is employed with Guilford County Schools in High Point.
Progress Energy Award
Pinehurst resident Sarah Cuff has earned one of the 30 Progress Energy Merit Award Scholarships. Progress Energy awards the scholarships annually to qualifying college-bound children of company employees and retirees.
The awards are worth $1,500 per year and are renewable annually for up to four years.
Sarah Cuff, the daughter of Sharon Cuff, graduated from Pinecrest High School.
Cuff graduated from Pinecrest High School. Cuff plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Serves as Page
Ian Randall Presley, a student at The O’Neal School, recently served as a page at the North Carolina Senate.
He is the son of Peggy and Randall Presley of Southern Pines. Presley was sponsored by Senator Tony Rand. Pages are appointed by the Senate President Pro Tempore , Marc Basnight. For decades the Senate for the N.C. General Assembly has relied on the service pages, who provide invaluable help by delivering bills and amendments for senators during daily Senate session, running errands and helping staff members manage offices at the Legislative Building.
Earns Scholarship
Daniel L. Gwyn recently graduated from Union Pines High School as part of the Class of 2003.
He received a $2,000 scholarship to Sandhills Community College and is the son of Pat and Tim Williamson of Carthage, Danny H. Gwyn of Aberdeen. Grandparents are Valeria C. Gwyn of Charlotte, formally of Aberden, James Bailry of Troy, and Joseph and Shirley Williamson of Aberden. Gywn was in school band for two years and studied horticulture and agriscience at Union Pines. He plans to attend Sandhills Community College in the fall. Gwyn says he will study computers and programing and will continue to be active in his youth group at church, New Life Tabernade UPC.
Davidson College
A Pinehurst student at Davidson College, Brandon Keith Hood, was one of 398 seniors to graduate in commencement exercises on Sunday, May 18.
Hood is the son of Roger and Todie Hood, and is a graduate of Pinecrest High School. A political science major at Davidson, Hood earned a bachelor’s degree cum laude.
While at Davidson, Hood was co-president of the College Republicans, was an intern for U.S. Congressman Robin Hayes, and was a volunteer on Elizabeth Dole’s senatorial election campaign.
West Completes Degree
Christine B. West graduated magna cum laude, with Phi Beta Kappa distinction, on May 10 from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va.
She received her bachelor of arts degree in communication studies and minors in French and art.
West is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
She was selected to membership in Golden Key International Honor Society in 2001.
Other achievements include membership in Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
West is a former graduate of The O’Neal School and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley West of Southern Pines.
West also served as a summer intern with The Pilot in 1998.
