Promise Keepers

Promise Keepers continues its 12th conference season with a stop in Raleigh, July 19-20. Thousands of men from across North Carolina and surrounding states are expected to attend the event being held at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.

The event will include Christian speakers and high-energy music.

Conference topics will encourage men to grow in their faith and to become better husbands, fathers and friends.

Times are 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Twelve years after its founding by former University of Colorado head football coach Bill McCartney (1990), Promise Keepers has drawn some 4.8 million men to more than 140 stadium and sports arena conferences and outdoor rallies across North America. In 1997, the organization convened the largest religious event in U.S. history, a “sacred assembly” called Stand in the Gap, which drew a reported 1 million men to the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Survival Conference

The Christian Mission Center of Moore County will host a Men’s Survival Conference Monday, July 15 through Friday, July 19 at Bellview AME Zion Church in Robbins.

The theme of the conference is “Stand Up and Be a Man.” The speaker will be W.E. Judd of Raleigh. Information: 947-5787.

Canoe Challenge

The “church challenge” canoe races will be held at Reservoir Park in Southern Pines on Saturday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Several area churches will be represented by boaters of all ages and ability levels. A hot dog cookout will be provided. The cost is $5 per person.

“This is a great opportunity to have good, clean family fun and enjoy the outdoors as well as make new Christian friends,” said a spokesman.

Tea Planned

Widow / Widowers Tea is set for Monday July 22 at 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Luther Way, Southern Pines.

All members and friends are welcome. This is the third meeting of this group that gathers every three months. The program includes fellowship, refreshments and this month a video by the N. C. Bluebird Society taken right in the nest as it is built, as eggs are laid and hatched and as the first feedings occurred. Information: 692-2662.

Christian Singles

New Beginnings Christian Singles Group will be meeting every second and fourth Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Golden Corral in Southern Pines.

Julian Gathering

A Julian Gathering —- a contemplative prayer group associated with the Episcopal Order of St Julian of Norwich — has been formed at St Mary Magdalene.

The group meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. to practice various forms of contemplative prayer in the context of a Meditation Mass.

St. Mary Magdalene is located on Seven Lakes Drive, Seven Lakes. Fr. Robert J. Laws III is the Vicar.

Brownson Guests

Brownson’s Summer Worship Services, which begin at 10 a.m. each Sunday will spotlight Karen Currie Allen on July 7, Holy Communion on July 14, the Rev. John A. Pilutti, Reigonal Development Officer, Presbyterian Foundation on July 21, the Rev. Bill Daniels, a HOSPICE Chaplain in Richmond, Va. on July 28 and the Rev. James R. Dellert, former Pastor at BMPC on August 4.

A Southern Pines native, Karen Currie Allen lead in worship tihs Sunday. She grew up in Southern Pines and was confirmed at age 12. While attending Brownson, she participated in the youth group and choir until college days at Appalachain State University.

Through her participation in summer church camp programs at both Camp Monroe and Camp Fincastle, Allen said she felt called to educational ministry. Upon completion of her undergraduate degrees at Appalachain, she completed her Master’s degree in christian education from P.S.C.E./Union in Richmond, Va. in 1980. Allen currently works as associate for Camps and Education for the St. Andrews Presbytery in Oxford, Miss., where she has served for 15 years. Along with her husband, the Rev. Robert Allen, they are co-directors of St. Andrew Presbytery’s Camp Hopewell.

She plans to seek ordination to the Ministry of Sacrament and Word.

In addition to the Brownson Choir, music for this service will be provided by Kim Clark, French Trombone, and Amy Currie Parker, a soprano soloist.

New Staff

Christ Fellowship Church announces the appointments of two new staff members.

Randy Clendenin, a local marriage and family consultant, and his wife, Suzanne, a music educator, began in mid-June at CFC. Randy will be the new interim pastor with duties that include delivering weekly sermons and providing pastoral care to the congregation. Suzanne’s position will be director of Music/Education at the church.

Throughout their 25 years of marriage the Clendenin’s have worked on various church staffs in Indiana, Virginia and North Carolina. They say their desire is for Christ Fellowship to become a vibrant, biblically-based, relevant place of service to the people of Southern Pines and Moore County. As a family-oriented couple, they will be implementing new opportunities for ministry for all age groups.

There will be a music camp for children kindergarten-sixth grade on July 22-26 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Call the church at 692-5155 to register for this camp.”

Christ Fellowship is an Evangelical Presbyterian Church of the Mid-Atlantic Presbytery. The church is located at 1425 Midland Road, Southern Pines.

Gospel Concert

Creative promotions presents “A Summer Evening of Gospel Music” featuring The Booth Brothers and Mercy’s Well on Saturday, July 6, at 7 p.m. at the Westmoore Agri-Civic Center in Robbins. Spirit of Excellence

The Pentecostal Assembly Of Jesus Christ, Southern Pines, invites the public to share with them in their Spirit of Excellence Conference 2002 July 10-13.

The schedule features guest speaker Bishop Frank Summerfield, Word of God Fellowship, Raleigh, on Wednesday; Pastor William E. (Bill) Simmons, Trinity Faith Full Gospel Church, Wendell, Thursday and the luncheon speakers Friday from noon-2 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Southern Pines will be host Pastors Roy and Costella McKoy, Pentacostal Assembly of Jesus Christ, Southern Pines.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday night, the guest speaker will be William T. Ford of Parks Chapel FWB Church, Fayetteville. On Saturday, guest speaker Evangelist Zondra McKoy, White Plains, Md., will join the group. The day sessions will be held on Thursday and Friday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

All day and night sessions are free and open to the public; offerings will be received during the conference. There will be a $20 registration fee for the leadership luncheon, which is restricted to ministry leadership.

Aerobics Classes

Harrington Chapel FWB Church, 158 Carlisle Street, Southern Pines, announces its “Body Temple Gospel Aerobics” class.

Classes are scheduled every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:15 p.m., promptly.

“This class is designed to uplift you spiritually, mentally, and physically,” said a spokesman.

The class will include an 8 -10 minute warm-up, 20-40 minute aerobic session, 10-15 minute muscular conditioning session/abdominal session, and 8-10 minute cool down session. This class is scheduled to last one hour. Cost: $15 per month.
