Miller Earns Degree From Azusa Pacific
Southern Pines resident Christine Elise Miller graduated from Azusa Pacific University in California with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, on Saturday, May 4.
Miller was joined by more than 1,000 graduates at the spring commencement exercises.

CCCC releases President’s List
Central Carolina Community College has announced that the following students have been named to the President’s List for the 2002 spring semester. Students on the President’s List earned all A’s and obtained a perfect grade point average of 4.0. These students were registered for at least 12 semester hours and made no incomplete grades.
From Moore County includes Erica Larae Street of Pinehurst, Jody E. Davis of Carthage, Joseph Clark Wood of Cameron, and Michael David Jeffries of Robbins.
The following local students have been named to the dean’s list for the 2002 spring semester. Students on the dean’s list obtained a grade point average of at least a 3.5 on a 4.0 system. These students were registered for at least 12 semester hours and made no grade lower than a “C” with no incomplete grades.
They area: Andrew David Scott of Robbins, Orlanda Lennon Jr., Peggy Jackson Cotten, R. Michael Emig, Ray C. Bell, Raymond Howard Bladen III, Robert L Jarrett, Jennifer Gunter Pascarella, all of Cameron; Andrew Kelly Wicker of Carthage, Carlton Wade Arnold of Cameron, Christopher Lee York and Daniel Joseph Clevenger, both of Carthage, Johnnie Dwayne Williams of Eagle Springs and Linda Crews Dunlap of Carthage.
Also named to the dean’s list are Lola Denise Marsh of Carthage, Martha Allison Jones of Whispering Pines, Maxwell A Sidley of Vass, Tonya Osborne Smith of Cameron, William H. Ellerbee of Vass and William Parker Britt of Star.
Ford Graduates
Ryan Michael Ford graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., on June 1, with a bachelor of fine arts in painting.

Lenoir-Rhyne Honors
Lenior-Rhyne College in Hickory has announced the Dean’s and President’s Lists for the 2002 spring semester.
Kerry Kathleen Kolster of Pinehurst was named to the dean’s list.
Kristin Kimberly Kolster of Pinehurst was named to the president’s list.
Established in 1891, Lenoir-Rhyne College is a private, coeducational college affiliated with the N.C. Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is open to students from all religious backgrounds.
Drakeford Awarded Scholarship
Jessica Drakeford, a student at Pinecrest High School, has been awarded the Retired School Personnel District 8 Scholarship and the Laurinburg Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theata Scholarship. Jessica is the daughter of Sharon and Johnnie Drakeford of Southern Pines.
NCSSM Graduates
A total of 251 high school seniors from across North Carolina graduated from The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham on Saturday, June 1.
Commencement exercises were held at 10 a.m. on the Watts Lawn of NCSSM’s campus. Welcoming remarks were given by the School’s Executive Director, Gerard L. Boarman and by Bart Corgnati, a representative of the Administration of the University of North Carolina.
The student speakers were David Kincaid of Hudson and Kristin Neal of Greenville. Kincaid and Neal were chosen as the student commencement speakers through a speechwriting contest. The pair took a unique approach to the contest and wrote a joint speech. Katherine Chen of Cary was the runner-up in the contest.
Student Government Vice President Nitin Kulkarni of Elizabeth City presented the Class of 2002’s Senior Class gift. The Class of 2002 created a campus playground on the former site of an old boiler plant torn down last summer.
Six Moore County students were among the 2002 NCSSM graduates. They are: Katherine Noel Baer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Baer III, of Pinehurst; Andrew Thomas Frazier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Frazier, of Seven Lakes; Erin Rae Gillespie, daughter of Irene Hanley, of Pinehurst; Kathryn Clelia Pezzi, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Pezzi, of Whispering Pines, Daniel Sven Piergallini, son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Piergallini of Pinehurst, all former Pinecrest High School students; and Richard Andrew Varner, a former Union Pines student and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Varner of Whispering Pines.
Hudson Named to Dean’s List
April Hudson of Aberdeen was named to the dean’s list at Liberty University for the spring 2002 semester. Hudson was one of 1,210 students who earned dean’s list recognition for the spring.
Liberty University is a private, Christian liberal arts university in Lynchburg, Va.
Methodist Honors
One hundred fifty-six students were named to the President’s List and 201 students were named to the dean’s list at Methodist College for the 2002 spring semester.
Jennifer Lynn Goeglein and James A. Kolar, both of Cameron, earned a place on the President’s List.
Kristin Anne Fiska of Pinehurst earned a place on the dean’s list.
Mount Olive Honors
Mount Olive College announces the students who were named to the President’s and Dean’s Lists for the spring semester of 2002.
The dean’s list honors those full-time students who have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher with no grade less than a “C” for the semester.
The student from Moore County named to the dean’s list is Chasity Oxendine of Vass.
Percell Graduates
Renarda Lynea Percell, daughter of Howard and Annie Percell of Carthage, graduated from Winston-Salem State University on May 11.
The graduate received a bachelor of science degree in business administration with concentration in management and a minor in political science.
Even though she graduated in 3 ½ years, she was everything but quiet throughout her stay at the university, according to her family.
Her freshman year she was dorm council secretary, her sophomore year she served as class representative, her junior years she was voted Miss Junior Class queen along with being class representative, her final semester she was named Miss Day Student and was a member of the student body cabinet.
She was on the dean’s list every semester.
Renarda is now working at Crawford & Company in the Washington, D.C. branch with the state handling, litigating, and present claims to the court.
She says she is looking forward to starting Graduate School in August at Strayer University in Manassas, Va., while also taking minor courses in computer science.
“We are very, very proud of Renarda and we wish her much success,” says a family member.
McLellan Earns Master’s Degree
Velma H. McLellan recently completed all requirements granting her a Master of School Administration degree at the 135th commencement ceremony held at Fayetteville State University. She is married to Phillip McLellan and they have two daughters.
