Gardner-Webb Scholarship Offer
Gardner-Webb University announces that Kimberly Boulton of Southern Pines has been presented with the university’s Presidential Scholarship.
She is the daughter of R. Scott and Susan Boulton.
As a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship which is one of the most prestigious offers an incoming freshman can receive at Gardner-Webb, this scholarship recognizes superior academic acheivement, demonstrated leadership and service to the community.
Gardner-Webb Univeristy is a private, co-educational institution located in Boiling Springs, which is in the Piedmont region of North Carolina.
ASU Honors
Appalachian State University announces the names of students from Moore County who have been named to the dean’s and chancellor’s lists for spring semester.
To be included on the dean’s list a student must either be enrolled in 12 to 14 hours of academic credit and attain a 3.45 grade point average or be enrolled in 15 or more hours of academic credit and attain a 3.25 grade point average.
Chancellor’s list students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours of academic credit and attain a 3.85 grade point average.

Meredith Degrees
Several students from Moore County have received a degree at Meredith College’s Spring Commencement held on Sunday, May 12 at the McIver Amphitheater on the college’s campus in Raleigh.
A luncheon for the graduates, families and friends as well as Meredith faculty, trustees and staff was held after the ceremony in the courtyard.
Among the graduates was Julia Beth Dunlap of Lakeview who graduated magna cum laude, a designation given to grads who have an academic average of 3.6 out of 4.0.
Ginger Kay Moore of Robbins and Amber Rae Patrick of Vass both received cum laude degrees from Meredith, indicating their GPAs were between 3.2 and 3.4, and Jennifer Elizabeth Ormsby of Pinehurst was also named as one of the local graduates.
Texas Christian Grad
Nicole McMahon Mertz, daughter of Karen and Ron Mertz of Seven Lakes, graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 11. She received a bachelor of science degree with a major in fashion promotion and a minor in advertising/public relations.
After graduating from La Canada High School in La Canada Flintridge, Calif., Nicole made the decision to pursue her education at the Fort Worth University.
Despite suffering a stroke in October 2001, and undergoing open heart surgery, Nicole managed to resume her studies and finished her secondary education in four years.
Through her time at TCU, she maintained a major G.P.A of 3.8 and an overall G.P.A. of 3.0.
Nicole currently has plans to pursue a career in visual merchandising.
Clendenin Earns Degree
Lauren Katherine Clendenin of Whispering Pines received a degree from Wake Forest University during commencement exercises May 20. U.S. Senator John McCain addressed the 1,363 students receiving undergraduate, graduate, and proffessional degrees.
Sen. McCain told the graduates to lend their talents to the service of our country’s ideals.
Lauren is the daughter of Randy and Suzanne Clendenin, and will be entering Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in the fall pursuing a master’s degree in counseling.
