Eastern Star

Three members of Aberdeen Chapter #259 Order of The Eastern Star were honored on April 14, in the home of Frank and Ann McNeill. Catherine Burns, Dorothy McNeill and Mary Marks were awarded their 50-year service pins.

Several members from Aberdeen Chapter attended along with Grace Rea of Carthage, Associate Grand Matron of Grand Chapter of North Carolina Order of The Eastern Star. Rea presented the pins due to the absence of Marge Hudson, Worthy Grand Matron of North Carolina. As part of the presentation, she told of things that occurred during the year they became a member.

Catherine and Dorothy’s brother, W.H. McNeill, Jr., who was present for the pinning, was Worthy Grand Patron for the State of North Carolina at that time. A family member had the privilege of pinning each honoree.

Dorothy’s brother, Frank McNeill, honored her; Johnny Burns honored his mother, Catherine Burns; Frances Bosworth had the honor of pinning her mother, Mary Marks. Following the presentation, many pictures were taken. Afterwards, all enjoyed refreshments and fellowship.

Sons of Confederate Veterans Organizing

An effort is currently underway to establish a Moore County Chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans(SCV).

First organized in 1896, the SCV is the nation’s oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers and sailors and is dedicated to preserving their history and legacy so that future generations will understand their reasons for fighting for Southern Independence.

Of the 127,000 North Carolinians who fought for the Confederacy during the War Between the States(1861-1865), 1,200 were citizens-soldiers from Moore County. The new Moore County SCV Camp will dedicate itself to honoring their valor as well as preserving and promoting North Carolina’s Southern history and heritage.

Membership in the SCV is open to all those who have a direct or collateral ancestor who was a Confederate veteran.

If you are interested in honoring your Confederate ancestor you are invited to join the new Moore County SCV Camp or if you want to find out if you have a Confederate ancestor, call Jim Hathaway at 673-5554 or e-mail thehathaways@earthlink.net for information.

Moore Republican Men

Bill Cobey, N.C. Republican Party Chairman spoke to a large gathering of local Republicans on Thursday, June 13.

Approximately 140 members and guests were present at the noon luncheon to hear Cobey present an optimistic outlook for N.C. Republicans in the upcoming fall elections. He pointed out several reasons for optimism: high approval ratings for President Bush, the redistricting and current financial problems left behind by the previous Democratic administration.

In addition to Cobey, eight of the candidates for vacancies to the Moore County Board of Education were present and were introduced to the audience. They were: Tom Brennan, Blanchie Dowdy Carter, Dale Frye, Jennifer Garner, Charles Lambert, Matt McWilliams, Noah Key and Jimmy Chalfinch. The next meeting will be Sept. 12.
