CLUBS

ACT II

ACT II was formed in 1988 by those “Newcomers” who wanted to keep the fun going longer than the two years imposed by Newcomer rules. So all Newcomer graduates in the Pinehurst area may call Trudy Blake, membership chairman, at 235-0859 for further information.

Book Club

The book club will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday July 23. You must make a reservation to attend. The book will be “The Dark Room” and the reviewer is Dorothy Gunn Call Joan Grant at 215-0377. Refreshments are by Marion Burke and Mary Critton. August 27 the book will be “Welcome to the World Baby Girl.” Questions regarding Book Club, call Donna Dacre at 215-8147 or Sharon Russell at 295-3293.

Act II Golf

The next dates are July 10 at the Carolina, July 17 at Whispering Woods and July 24 at Little River. Call Olie Darrach at 235-0890 or Pat Duffy at 295-4306 for information or tee times.

Dining In

We invite Act II members to join our group. The next Dining In will be July 21 with cocktails from 6 p.m. Please call either Edwina Monaghan at 215-8823 or Pam Hylton at 295-2896. The cut-off date for reservations is July 12.

Dining Out

Act II is headed for the Paddock at Longleaf on Thursday July 19. Call Carol Quinn at 215-9036 to make your reservations by June 29.

Luncheonettes

Come and join Act II for a luncheon that is good fun and good food. Call Carol Duffy at 295-4306 or March Soltis at 235-0533 for reservations.

Tar Heel Travelers

Bob and Lorraine Tweed are putting together a Mystery Trip for Sept. 12 – 15. They will just advise what to pack and all will be ready for the surprise. Golf, shopping and sightseeing are in store for those who sign up on Aug. 8. Call Bob and Lorraine at 295-3199.

Dining and Dancing

Big doings at the Pinehurst Country Club on Friday Aug. 10. Call Martha or Bart O’Connor at 235-0635 for reservations, which must be made before Aug. 6.

Board Meeting

The Act II Board Meeting is held the second Saturday of every month at 9 a.m. at the Pinehurst Country Club Meeting Room. Anyone having suggestions or new ideas for activities may contact Carol Alexander 295-9591 or Trudy Blake at 235-0859.

Foxfire Book Club

At the Foxfire Book Club’s June 18 meeting in the Fireplace Room of the clubhouse, the book discussed was “The Road From Coorain,” by Jill Ker Conway. In her autobiography she describes her life on a remote Australian sheep station, and the later experiences which took her half a world away, to become the first woman president of Smith College in Massachusetts.

At the July 16 meeting at 3 p.m. the group will discuss Robert Inman’s “Dairy Queen Days,” describing a teenage boys life in a Georgia milltown. The book chosen for the Aug. 20 meeting is “Mutant Message Down Under” by Marlo Morrison and Carri Garrison. The group selected Louis de Bernieres exciting “Corelli’s Mandolin” for their Sept. 17 book discussion.

Foxfire Garden Club

The Foxfire Garden Club invites all of the residents of Foxfire Village to a ceremony dedicating its Memorial Garden to the memory of all former village residents.

This newest community beautification project of the garden club is located at the corner of Richmond and Hoffman roads, and will balance the garden on the opposite corner. Planting is now completed, with evergreens and summer flowers; and an engraved plaque mounted on a large stone will be placed in this memorial garden.

The ceremony will take place at the garden at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 13. Those attending are invited to come to the clubhouse afterward, where light refreshments will be served.

Bridge

Ladies Marathon 11 will begin in September. If you have an interest in being a part of this group call Eve Metz for details. Sixteen players are needed . You may get your own partner or sign up as a single.

Book Discussion I

The July 26 meeting will be held at the home of Shirley Pacquette . The books to be discussed are “House of Sand & Fog” by Andre Dubus III and “Storm Track” by Margaret Maron. Please note that both the meeting place and books to be discussed are changed from our original program.

Book Discussion II

Members will meet at the home of Diane Norman to complete their discussion of “No Ordinary Time”. Please note this is a change from the last newsletter. Marie Winterberg will host the July 27 meeting. “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Tracy Chevalier will be discussed.

Jazz in June

This sold out event was a complete success. It was held at the home of John and Shirley Wake. Program chairpersons were Carla Jones & Marian Revenaugh.

Newcomers

Ladies Monthly Bridge

Bridge players with all levels of skill are invited to the next session of Ladies Monthly Bridge scheduled for Wednesday, July 18 at 10 a.m. in the Members Club. Call Elsie Takacs (215-8907) or Pat Bohan (235-0461) to make a reservation. A fee of $11 covers the bridge and lunch. Nifty Niners

The Nifty Niners will play at the Elks on July 2 and the remainder of the month at Midland. On the 2nd we will meet at 8:30 a.m. and tee off by 9. On the 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th we will meet at 8 a.m. and tee off by 8:30. Plan on joining us for a casual lunch at a local eatery. If you are interested please call Mary Beth Speedling at 215-9009, no later than the Friday prior, to sign up.

Newcomers Touring

Wednesday, July 25. Durham Bulls baseball; Wednesday Oct. 17. Mountain Day Tour to Mabry Mill, Blue Ridge Parkway, Chateau Morrisette Winery Tour and lunch. Shopping in the mountains of Meadows of Dan, Va. Any questions call 295-2257.

Book Club

Home Decorating

On Wednesday, July 11, we will travel to High Point hoping to take advantage of the after market sales. Our destinations are The Atrium with its many diversified shops, the outlets for Rose Furniture, Wood-Armfield, 1502 Fabrics and possibly one or two more of your favorites. (Please let us know in advance what they are.) It will be a very full day. Wear walking shoes. We plan to leave at 8:45 a.m. from the Lowe’s parking lot on 211.We will meet on the east side of the market. Our return drive will begin at 3:30 p.m. $3 will be collected from each person to pay for the gas of volunteer drivers. Please RSVP to Selma Schwartzbach at 295-3336 or Carol Carlyle at 215-5852.
