Aberdeen Class of ’53 Meets for Reunion


The Aberdeen High School Class of 1953 met for its 47th reunion on Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20.

Members of the class along with their husbands and wives enjoyed fellowship and a cookout on Friday evening hosted by the reunion committee and dinner at The Barn in Southern Pines on Saturday evening.

On Friday evening, the group was welcomed by Joel Stancil, and the invocation was led by Sadie Maurer. Pork barbecue and grilled chicken, cooked by classmate Herb Thomas, with all the trimmings was enjoyed. Class members received a booklet of memorabilia prepared by Nycie Stancil.

On Saturday evening, Joel Stancil served as master of ceremonies, and the invocation was led by Edwin Teal. A memorial rose was placed on each table honoring the deceased class members; Shirley Seawell Bobbitt, Jimmy Crump, Gerald Tyndall, Bill McQuire, Kermit Littleton, and Dolly Adams Leach. After dinner the class prophecy was read by Mary Frances Pohl Carrington with class members relating what they had done since high school and whether or not the prophecy had come true.

Class members traveling the longest distances were Helen Vinson Clouse from Boerne, Texas, Howard Troutman from Luling, La., Bobby Baker from Fort St. Lucie, Fla. and Sue Cribb Fambro from Forrest Park, Ga. Others attending were Mary Lou Cameron Black, Polly Clayton Garner, Gladys Matthews Harris, Richard Peele, Joseph Rosy, Joel Stancil, and Edwin Teal of Aberdeen, Robert Carrington, Mary Frances Pohl Carrington, and Betty Baughn Rush of Southern Pines, Ralph Gordon of Wagram, Ruby Green Speas of Mebane, Shirley Lewis Garner of Vass, Dudley McLean of Raleigh, Bill Russell of Lexington, Richard Sykes and Herbert Thomas of Pinebluff, Doris Troutman McPhaul of Sanford, Charles Dunn of Spring Lake, Shirley Wood Barbour of Fayetteville, and Janice Garner Shue of Pinehurst.

Special guests were the classes high school teachers: Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Bowman, Sadie Maurer, John Blanchard, and Julia Graham Blanchard. Other guests were Shelvey Crump, John and Ann Matthews, and Elaine Cameron Watkins.

The reunion committee consisted of Robert and Mary Frances Carrington, Lloyd and Gladys Harris, Edwin and Myrtle Teal, Joseph and Barbara Rosy, Joel and Nycie Stancil, and D.P. and Mary Lou Black. Class members are looking forward to the 50th reunion in 2003.
