Spice up your summer reading list Friday nights at 9:30, beginning July 7, when UNC-TV’s local literary series, “North Carolina Bookwatch,” returns for an all-new ninth season.

In every primetime interview (with encores Sundays, at 5 p.m.), host D.G. Martin sheds light on authors’ lives, books and the state’s indelible imprint on their works.

“Over the past eight seasons, ‘North Carolina Bookwatch’ has developed a strong following and the new primetime timeslot gives us a wonderful opportunity to introduce our local authors to an even larger audience,” says series producer Morgan Potts. “It’s like walking into your local bookstore and seeing our featured books right in front…with the new timeslot, I feel like we just made it to the front of the store and I hope everyone will stop to take a closer look.”

The new season of “North Carolina Bookwatch” certainly has a lot to see. The latest 20-episode installment of this popular Southern series spotlights even more remarkable reads from North Carolina’s best writers, leading off with Will Blythe’s discussion of his acclaimed book, “To Hate Like This Is To Be Happy Forever,” about the storied Duke-North Carolina basketball rivalry.

Other authors featured in July include John Hart and his New York Times bestseller, “The King of Lies” (July 14), Sarah Dessen and her New York Times bestseller, “Just Listen” (July 21), and Kristin Henderson, whose book “While They’re at War” about American military families was called “a must-read for those both in and out of uniform” by veteran Sen. John McCain (July 28).

“We have a wonderful lineup of North Carolina writers this season,”says series host D.G. Martin. “These authors are so fired up about the subject matter of their books that they make the most interesting guests. I am so lucky to have the chance to talk to them and learn from them.”

During this season of North Carolina Bookwatch, guests will also include: David Payne (“Back to Wando Passo,” Aug. 4), John Hope Franklin (“Mirror to America,” Aug. 11), Leah Stewart (“The Myth of You and Me,” Aug. 18), Andrew Britton (“The American,” Aug. 25), Allan Gurganus (“New Stories from the South,” Sept. 1), Tom Carlson (“Hatteras Blues,” Sept. 8), Bill Smith (“Seasoned in the South,” Sept. 15), William Leuchtenburg (“The White House Looks South,” Sept. 22), Dot Jackson (“Refuge,” Sept. 29), Art Chansky (“Blue Blood,” Oct. 6), Mark Ethridge (“Grievances,” Oct. 13), Paul Leonard (“Music of a Thousand Hammers,” Oct. 20), and Angela Davis-Gardner (“Plum Wine,” Oct. 27).

Funding for “North Carolina Bookwatch” is provided by UNC-TV members and by Quail Ridge Books and Music, Raleigh’s independent, full service bookstore, bringing readers and writers together since 1984.

“North Carolina Bookwatch” is part of UNC-TV’s ongoing commitment to produce programs for and about North Carolina. UNC-TV is the statewide 11-station broadcast network of the University of North Carolina.
