Train Kills Man In Southern Pines

BY DAVID SINCLAIR: MANAGING EDITOR

An Amtrak passenger train struck and killed a Southern Pines man early Saturday morning.

Derek Eugene Overton, 30, was apparently walking across the tracks near Rhode Island Avenue when the southbound train struck him.

The train came to a stop after the accident, and CSX and Amtrak personnel called in the accident. Few other details were available.

Southern Pines police were investigating the accident. The Police Department had not released an official report as of The Pilot's press deadline Saturday.

Overton had apparently been walking home. He lived at 890 N. May St. He worked for Boles Supply Inc. of Aberdeen. He is survived by his wife, Tracy, and a son and a daughter.

"Derek was a loving husband and father," a family member said.
