The scholarship is renewed for four years if Fairley makes good progress in school.
The John W. Williams Scholarship has been awarded for 15 years. Peggy K. Bell's name was joined to the scholarship this year to honor "the great warm and productive friendship of John Williams and Peggy Bell," the club said in a news release.
"Coach" Williams was noted for his ability to involve the community in helping Pinecrest students and athletics. Peggy and Bullet Bell were very generous friends of Williams and Pinecrest. Pine Needles' tractors, seeds and fertilizer helped to establish the athletic fields when Pinecrest was built.
The Bells were supportive of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which was one of John Williams' major achievements.
To honor the friendship and celebrate the notion that the community must support schools if they are to succeed, Peggy Kirk Bell was joined with Williams in the scholarship, the club said.
Bill Strickland, one of Williams' high school quarterbacks and chairman of the selection committee, presented Fairley to the Kiwanis Club.
She is listed in Who's Who among American High Schoolers, National Honor Roll and National Distinguished List and received a Burger King Scholarship. Fairley has achevied all of this while working as a server at nights and on weekends. The scholarship is awarded to achieving students who have severe financial need.
Williams' widow, Pat, and Bell were present for the presentation of a plaque to interim Pinecrest Principal Gary Evans by club President Scott Dawson.
The plaque contains spaces to engrave future recipients' names. The Kiwanis Foundation has an Endowment Fund of $250,000 to support the Scholarship.
