A field of 112 boys and girls competed in the event, which was the final in a 27-match season held in the Carolinas and Virginia for juniors ranging in age from 8 to 18.
Robert Hoadley of Southern Pines was runner-up to McGowan with 149, while Jonathan Miles of Wilmington took third with 154.
Will VanLandingham of Asheville won the 16-18 Age Division with a score of 150, followed by Scott Caragher of Charlotte and Justin Goforth of Candor with 152.
Larry Han of Raleigh won the 12-13 Division with 147. Robert Register of Burlington was at 148, while Richard Fountain of Raleigh shot 150.
Luke Haithcock of Burlington won the 10-11 Division with a score of 148. Joshua Martin of Pinehurst was second with 152, while William Register of Burlington shot 165.
Virginia Mayer of Charlotte won the Girls’ Division with 155. Lori Beth Adams of Burlington and Courtney Gunther of Matthews were tied at 157 for second place.
Senior Four-Ball: The teachers proved they could play in the Carolina PGA Senior Four-Ball held at Treyburn Country Club in Durham last week.
Bern Coulter, an instructor with East Coast Golf School at Magnolia Greens Golf Club in Wilmington and David Thore of Precision Golf School in Reidsville, teamed to capture the championship with 67-65 — 132.
The opening round of 67 left Coulter and Thore two strokes off the pace set by amateurs Dick Hogan of Burlington and Mark Wagner of Statesville and Ralph James and Cliff Seastrunk of Raleigh.
Coulter and Thore combined for seven birdies and 11 pars on the final day for their 12-under-par total. Hogan and Wagner shot a better-ball 68 to finish a stroke back at 133. James and Seastrunk soared to a second-round 75.
Tom Adams and Jim Deal of Boone took third with 134. Herb Conway and Hal Dugenske of Whispering Pines were at 141, while Chick Evans and Woody Bunting of Pinehurst shot 143.
Charles Daley and Dean Donley of Whispering Pines were at 144 and William Hiner and Bick Long of Pinehurst shot 147 to tie for 29th. Dick Wilson of Whispering Pines and Matthew Mills of Pinehurst finished at 151.
Glenn Lassiter of Robbins and Bill Cox of Gastonia tied for first place in the Super Seniors Division of 65 and up with a 140 score. They shared the title with Bob Bales of Lexington and Don Wright of Durham.
John Gerwig of Whispering Pines was at 151.
