Fields Earns Berth In U.S. Junior Am

Jack Fields of Southern Pines qualified for his second U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in a row at Bradford Creek Golf Club in Greenville on Thursday.

The rising junior at Pinecrest shot rounds of 71-67 -- 138 to finish second behind Chad Day of Raleigh in the one-day competition.

Only four golfers survived the field of 83 to earn a berth in the national championship to be held July 17-22 at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in California.

Local golfers that were in contention, but didn't gain a spot were Russell Burke of Pinehurst (73-71 -- 144), Robert Hoadley of Southern Pines (72-72 -- 144) and Patrick Barrett of Pinehurst (74-72 -- 146).

Fields made it into match play at last year's USGA event held in Longmeadow, Mass.
