Only four golfers survived the field of 83 to earn a berth in the national championship to be held July 17-22 at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in California.
Local golfers that were in contention, but didn't gain a spot were Russell Burke of Pinehurst (73-71 -- 144), Robert Hoadley of Southern Pines (72-72 -- 144) and Patrick Barrett of Pinehurst (74-72 -- 146).
Fields made it into match play at last year's USGA event held in Longmeadow, Mass.
