The Diamond (10-0) swept a doubleheader at Cape Fear, 1-0 and 8-4, in a pair of five-inning contests.
Andrew MacDonald pitched a no-hitter in the opener that was won with an unearned run in the top of the last inning. The Diamond bats heated up in the second game. One of three hits by Josh Haley was a monstrous home run that cleared the centerfield fence at the 365-foot mark.
The Diamond have a 7 p.m. non-league game at home against Scotland on Wednesday.
The state playoffs begin with a home game next Saturday with the time and opponent still to be determined.
Lawson Thomas led off the top of the fifth of the tense opener with a single. Pinch runner Holden Cheek took second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Luc Ouellette hit a grounder to short. Cheek took off with the crack of the bat, scoring all the way from second when the throw to first was wild.
MacDonald, who struck out five and walked three, gave up a two-out walk in the bottom of the fifth before completing the pitching gem.
"That was a huge game for us because we knew it would clinch the conference title," Diamond Coach Jeff Hewitt said. "We played a lot of subs in the second game and they played their butts off."
Ouellette started a three-run first-inning rally in the nightcap with a walk. A double off the left-field fence by Justin Richardson, a single by Chais Beloso and an outfield error did most of the damage.
Another single by Ouellette and doubles by Haley, Richardson and Cheek added up to a four-run second. Leading 7-4 in the fourth, Haley completed the scoring with his circuit clout. Taylor MacDonald, Richardson and Jeremy Evans pitched for the Diamond.
