Diminishing Returns

I just received my annual vehicle tax bill for my utility trailer.

The tax continues to be 57 cents per year. Moore County spent 27 cents for postage, plus paper and envelope and return envelope to send that bill. Someone will be paid to open the return envelope, process my payment, and take my check to the bank.

I have to believe the county is losing money on this transaction and who knows how many others like it. Isn’t there anyone smart enough to figure out the break-even point and program the computer to not bill for lesser amounts?

If my payment is late, they will charge me interest and begin collection procedures. I wonder what that would cost them?
