Summer Art Show Continues at UNCP

The 2005 Summer Art Show and Sale is now on display in Old Main at the Native American Resource Center (NARC) of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

The 2005 edition is one of the most diverse shows ever, says Dr. Stan Knick, NARC director and curator.

“This is a very eclectic show, one of the most diverse we’ve ever had in terms of media and style,” Knick says. “This is at once very traditional and very modern.”

In surveying the exhibition, Knick finds many pieces pleasing.

“I am very fond of the new styles Herman Locklear is employing in his pottery, and I’m very fond of Sheila Godwin’s Gourds,” Knick says. “Alceon Jones continues to reinvent her work.”

“I love the corn babies by Phyllis Lowery,” he says. “Shawn Jacobs continues to produce provocative work.”

From modern to traditional in oil, pottery, clay, gourds and other mixed media, there is a lot to see at the 2005 show. There is even a little of the unusual, like Shawn Jacobs’ abstractions and Jada Brooks’ framed poetry or “letter art” as Knick calls it.

Becky Goins of the Resource Center organized the show.

“We have many artists returning like Alceon Jones and Herman Locklear, but we have a lot of new artists, too, like Timmy Locklear, Jessica Clark (a 2005 UNCP graduate), Brandon Locklear (a current UNCP student) and youth artist Anastasia Oxendine,” Goins says.

The public is invited, and some works on exhibit are for sale. The Resource Center will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

“It’s a good show,” Knick says.

Here is a list of the Lumbee artists: Phyllis Lowery, Jada L. Brooks, Shelia Godwin, Herman Oxendine, Loretta Oxendine, Hubert Sampson, Alceon Jones, Jessica Clark, Anastasia Oxendine, Lisa Huggins-Oxendine, Brandon Locklear, Timmy Locklear and Shawn Jacobs.
