Simplistic Overview

Fred Wolferman’s June 8 column attempts in a few words to provide readers with a rather simplistic historic overview of the Middle East and the causes of the recent Muslim jihad against the United States and its allies.

He neglects to mention the state of Israel in his summary, yet the jihad of Bin Laden indicated clearly that Israel’s mistreatment of Palestinians and its long and illegal occupation of Palestinian and Syrian land, coupled with our blind support of Israel, were direct causes of the Arab attack against the World Trade Center. The other reason was our stationing of troops in Saudi Arabia near holy sites.

Wolferman believes that in time a crusade of the Western powers with perhaps China, India and Russia thrown in against the Arabs, may be the needed answer to terrorism.

United Nations members didn’t buy the Bush rationale for the war and have no wish to be dragged into this quagmire.

Indeed, the president is currently waging the Bush Crusade, and most Americans finally realize it ain’t doin’ too well. The abysmally planned Iraq War against the wrong enemy has generated more jihadists than anyone would have imagined. From a few enemies hiding out in Bora Bora with Bin Laden, we now see thousands of insurgents drawn to the fray, killing our soldiers daily.

As long as any Muslim fundamentalist can join the war against us via the Internet and enter Iraq where the unsecured borders are porous, the prospects for peace seem remote for years to come. Just as in Vietnam, we have a fatal policy of staying the course, when early on in both wars it was evident that the fundamental policy was flawed and a clear-cut victory impossible to achieve.
