Hurricanes Earn Silver Medal In State Games’ U9 Rec Soccer

The Hurricanes soccer team, competing in the U9 girls recreation division at this year’s State Games of North Carolina on June 25-26, completed a successful weekend of soccer in finishing second overall after a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in the gold medal game to the Soccer OP Lady Dynamo-Red team from Greensboro.

Greensboro scored early in the first half, but the Hurricanes fought back.

Midway through the second half, Hannah Kiser hustled down the right side on a pass from Abbey Crider to score, only to have the goal called off due to a handball call in the backfield. Despite several more shots on goal, the Hurricanes were unable to score.

The Hurricanes opened the tournament on Saturday with a 4-0 win over the Clinton United with Mary Dixon leading the way, scoring all four goals.

In the afternoon game, the Hurricanes defeated the eventual gold-medal winning team, the Lady Dynamo-Red team, 3-2, with scores from Kiser, MacKenzie Reed and Dixon to win its bracket and secure a spot in the medal round of the tournament.

Sunday morning saw the Hurricanes face their most difficult challenge.

The Hurricanes played to a 1-1 tie with the Wilson Dazzle with a goal from Kiser and survived two five-minute overtime periods. In the shootout, the Hurricanes, led by goalies Crider and Kiser, came back after missing its first two kicks to have Caitlyn Driver, Katelyn Richard and Dixon all hit their shots and win the shootout 3-2.

“It was an entire team effort,” coach Michael Beers said. “Our girls played their hearts out and showed just how good they really can play. I am so proud of what they have accomplished.”

The Hurricanes were sponsored by America’s Carpet Gallery in Pinehurst and represented the Sandhills Youth Soccer League for the recreational division.
