19TH HOLE: State Boys and Girls Homes Tournament Berths Filling Fast

BY HOWARD WARD: Golf Writer

It’s still almost six weeks away, but the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina Benefit Tournament scheduled for Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club Aug. 15 is rapidly filling.

According to tournament officials, team pledges are coming in nicely and the available berths could be filled before the Aug. 1 deadline.

The planning committee continues to obtain sponsors and silent auction items as well as accepting entries from foursomes and individuals. The entry fee for a foursome is $700 and a team can be made up of men, women or mixed players. Individual registrations are available for $175.

A ladies luncheon will be held in the Mid Pines dining room on the day of the event for wives and guests of the players and other invited guests. Cost for this is included in the registration fee.

Some of the prizes available include a new car for a hole in one on a specified hole and $1,000 cash for an ace on another par-3. Auction items available include a golf package at Grove Park Inn in Asheville.

Boys and Girls Homes of N.C. Inc. has been a home for hundreds of neglected and abused children from the Sandhills and other parts of the state for more than 50 years. The children receive a sound education experience, higher education opportunities, and spiritual development. All funds collected are tax deductible and will go to The Boys and Girls Homes of N.C.

For more information or for a registration brochure, the phone number is 944-5680, e-mail, golfrecord@alltel.net, or by mail at P.O. Box 4780, Pinehurst, NC 28374.

Mailbox: From Fred Zinn of Pinehurst: “You are the first real golf writer The Pilot has had since I moved to Pinehurst in 1987 and I enjoy your reporting.

You made a much-needed point in Sunday’s 19th hole. However, you missed a very important part of the procedure. From rule 12-2 it says ‘He may then lift the ball and identify it provided he gives his opponent, marker or fellow competitor an opportunity to observe the lifting and replacement.’

“We have had to stress that part in our weekly pot games. Keep up the good work.”

Zinn is referring to the rule regarding a player identifying his ball before hitting. Thank you, sir, for your kind words and clarification.

In my group, you’d better give the fellow competitor the opportunity to watch the procedure.
