Other State Races: Jordan Will Face Coble

BY MATTHEW MORIARTY: Staff Writer

William Jordan defeated Rick Miller in the Democratic primary for the 6th Congressional District Tuesday, according to unofficial returns.

Jordan will face incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Howard Coble of Greensboro in the November election. Moore County is in the 6th District.

Congressman Richard Burr won a Republican primary for U.S. Senate. He will face Democrat Erskine Bowles in November for the seat being vacated by Sen. John Edwards. Bowles did not have Democratic opposition.

Edwards, who grew up in Robbins, is Sen. John Kerry’s vice-presidential running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket.

In other statewide primaries, Jim Snyder won a three-way Republican primary for lieutenant governor over Timothy Cook and Thomas Stith. He will face Democratic Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue, whose primary opponent had been disqualified by the state elections board.

Joe Knott appeared to win the GOP nomination for attorney general in a three-way primary with Thom Goolsby and Wendell Sawyer. Unofficially, he had 42 percent of the vote. He will face Democratic incumbent Attorney General Roy Cooper.

Bill Fletcher won the Republican primary for state superintendent of public instruction. It appears that he will have to wait until Aug. 17 to find out who his Democratic opponent will be. There will likely be a runoff between June S. Atkinson and Marshall Stewart.

It also appears that there will be a runoff for a seat on the nonpartisan State Court of Appeals between Barbara Jackson and Alan Thornburg.

Leslie Merritt easily won the Republican primary for state auditor.

Incumbent Democratic Agriculture Commissioner Britt Cobb narrowly survived a primary race with challenger Tom Gilmore.

C. Robert Brawley defeated Cindy C. Huntsberry in the Republican primary for commissioner of insurance.

Incumbent Republican Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry and Democratic Secretary of State Elaine Marshall easily won their primaries.
