This summer, the team painted the intricate iron work on the windows and the ceilings and walls of the classrooms on the lower floor which is now complete. They also began laying block for the second floor that will become the sanctuary for the congregation.
The classrooms are already in use for Sunday activities and Pastor Adiel Espinosa Chi plans to expand the education programs to provide English and craft classes for the community surrounding the church.
The building is constructed of concrete block with rebar for support of the walls and will therefore serve as a hurricane shelter for the community whose citizens live in huts with thatched roofs and no windows or doors.
This summer’s team was the third to travel from West End and plans are being made for an adult trip in January of 2005.
Since the first trip four years ago the local congregation has supported their sister church through prayers and monetary gifts as the work progressed. During the summer of 2003 Pastor Adiel and his family were brought to North Carolina to meet the West End congregation.
