Hopkins Appointed Dean at St. Andrews

Dr. Robert J. Hopkins, professor of business and economics has been appointed acting vice president for academic affairs and dean of St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Hopkins assumed his new duties July 1 and has agreed to serve as acting dean until further notice, college President Dr. John Deegan Jr. announced.

“It is important to note, there has been a succession of exceptional individuals who have served as dean of the college,” Hopkins said. “I consider it an honor to have been asked to make a contribution to the Office of Academic Affairs during this important period in the life of the college.”

In addition to being chair of the Business and Economics Department at St. Andrews, Hopkins also serves as chair of the interdisciplinary General Education Program. His work outside the college includes serving as the director of the southeastern N.C. Chapter of the North Carolina Japan Center.

During the summer of 2001, Hopkins completed a faculty development internship in health economics.

He used the expertise of area leaders in hospital administration to develop a new course in health economics.

Previous faculty development work included an International Business Seminar at the University of South Carolina on International Business Management and International Business.

In the summer of 1994, he completed an internship in International Marketing at the World Trade Center in Raleigh.

Hopkins joined the St. Andrews faculty in 1983 as associate professor of business and economics and chair of the department. He has served the college as the director of continuing education and as director of the St. Andrews at Sandhills degree program.

His teaching experience includes microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, money and banking, Japanese business and society, international business management, business policy, entrepreneurship, marketing and finance.

In the summer of 1989, Hopkins strengthened the St. Andrews Asian Studies program by serving as a Three Nails Fellow in Obirin University, Tokyo, Japan.

Hopkins was the chair of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division of the College from 1989 to 1994 and again chair of the Business and Economics Department from 1994 to 1998.

Hopkins was the deputy program manager and education and training manager of the Laurinburg Electronic Commerce Resource Center (ECRC) at St. Andrews in the late 1990s.

The ECRC program was funded by the Department of Defense and was jointly operated by St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Concurrent Technologies Corporation.

Hopkins came to St. Andrews from Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C., where he was an associate professor of business and economics. He also served Limestone as the director of continuing education and the evening program.

He earned his doctorate in agricultural economics from the University of Tennessee. He received his master’s degree from the University of Tennessee and his bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Technological University.
