Doughty Earns

Honor Roll Distinction

Ashley Ann Doughty, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert A. Fleury of Southern Pines, achieved Honor Roll at Mercersburg Academy for the spring term. Doughty is in the 11th grade.

Mercersburg Academy is a co-educational, independent college preparatory boarding and day school in south-central Pennsylvania, which has prepared students for college and life beyond since 1893.

Emory University

Three local students recently earned degrees from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, Ga.

April Cameron of Cameron received a master of public health degree from the Rollins School of Public Health at its 158th commencement ceremony on May 12.

Ashley Puleo of Pinehurst, daughter of Dr. Joel Puleo and Dr. Ellen Puleo, also received a master of public health from the Rollins School of Public Health. Her official commencement ceremony took place on Dec. 21, 2002.

Jakucyk Earns Degree

Jeffrey B. Jakucyk graduated from the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati on June 13.

He was one of the 43 students to earn the first Master of Architecture degrees awarded by the University whose architecture program was recently ranked third in the nation by prospective employers. He was one of six students to receive a certificate in historic preservation at an earlier ceremony. Jakucyk participated in the University of Cincinnati’s cooperative program, spending a year and a half working for architecture firms in Chicago, Cincinnati, and Charleston, S.C. He also spent a summer abroad studying in Copenhagen. A 1997 graduate of Highland Park High School in Illinois, he is the son of Jack and Mary Jakucyk of Whispering Pines, formerly of Highland Park, Ill. The recent grad has joined the firm of RWA Architects, in Cincinnati.

Liberty University

Leon J. Bracy of Cameron recently graduated from Liberty University. Bracy received a bachelor of science in multidisciplinary studies.

Liberty University is a private, Christian liberal arts university in Lynchburg, Va.

Mount Olive

Approximately 250 students were recently graduated at Mount Olive College at the spring commencement ceremony.

Amanda Blue of Pinehurst was among the graduates. She earned a bachelor of science degree in management and organizational development.

Mount Olive College is a private, liberal arts institution with locations in Mount Olive, New Bern, Wilimington, Goldsboro, and the Research Triangle Park.

Oxford College

Kathryn Pezzi of Whispering Pines, daughter of Peter and Kathryn Pezzi, was named to the Honor List of Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emory University located in Oxford, Ga., for the 2003 spring semester. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher to be named to the honor list.

Randolph-Macon College

Kelly Prestipino, an economics/business major and mathematics minor from Pinehurst, graduated from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia on Saturday, May 31. While at Randolph-Macon College, Prestipino was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She belonged to several academic and leadership honor societies including Rho Lambda, the Order of Omega, Pi Mu Epsilon, and Omicron Delta Epsilon. She is a 1999 graduate of Council Rock High School and the daughter of Tony and Sarah Prestipino of Pinehurst.

Greensboro College Honors

Stacie Phelps of Cameron has been named to the 2003 Spring Semester Dean’s List at Greensboro College. Students who carry a minimum of six graded semester hours and attain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher are eligible to be placed on the Dean’s List. Phelps is an adult education student at Greensboro College.

RCC Honors

Randolph Community College announces the President’s List, Dean’s List and Honor List for the 2003 spring semester.

The spring’s President’s List includes Stephanie Gibbons of Whispering Pines. The Dean’s List includes William Ritter and Sandra Allred of Robbins.

The Honor List includes Lois McLeod, Elizabeth Ritter, Louise Sandoval, Many Bouldin, Hoyt Kennedy and Jonathan Emmons all of Robbins.

N.C. A&T News

Several Moore Count students are making news at North Carolina A&T University in Raleigh.

Jessica C. Moody of Moore County graduated during spring commencement ceremonies.

Also, the following students from Moore County made the dean’s list for the spring semester of 2003. The students are: April J. Balsley, Darren L. Brand, Theron D. Brower Jr., Sabrina E. Dunn, Jerry L. Jones, Jessica Russell Latham, Leon N. Lyons, Jessica C. Moody, and Teneisha Phillips.

Davidson College

A Sothern Pines student at Davidson College, Rebecca Lee Stewart, was one of 398 seniors to graduate in commencement exercises on Sunday, May 18.

Stewart is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Stewart of Lauren Lane, and is a graduate of Pinecrest High School. An international development studies major at Davidson through the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, Stewart earned the B.A. degree magna cum laude.

While at Davidson, Stewart was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society, was elected to the Honor Council, and received the Collier Cobb/ Lilly Scholarship for Class of 2003. She studied photography in Florence, Italy and traveled to Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Peru. She will join Teach for America in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas after graduation.
