Representing the chorus in Portland and receiving the award was Dick Curl, programs vice-president of the local chapter.
Curl credited three major activities for the Chapter’s success. “First is our annual show at Lee Auditorium, Pinecrest High School, which we usually sell out and receive a lot of community support through ads in the program. This year the date is Nov. 2. Our guest quartet is Michigan Jake, the 2001 International Champion. Second is our “Singing Valentines” program, where we deliver songs. roses and expressions of love all over the Sandhills on Valentines Day. Third is our “Liven It Up” program where we provide quartets ensembles and/or a chorus for all sorts of events and programs. We sing for parties, anniversaries, club meetings dinners, etc. —- just about anything which requires clean, lively entertainment. Fees are minimal and all go to support worthy causes.”
“We sing for fun and charity,”, said Larry Harter, president of the Chorus. “Most of the monies we raise goes to local, charitable, organizations. Substantial contributions made in 2001 included the Sandhills Children’s Center, Constructive Education for Children, Habitat for Humanity, The Moore County Literary Council, Empty Stocking Fund and the Linus Project.
“When we are able to have fun, entertain people, and through the good graces and wonderful support of the people of the Sandhills community, come out as number one in the world, we know we are doing something right! We raised over $10,000 last year and almost $100,000 since 1990. Additionally, we have a program in the Moore County School System to introduce four part, acapella, harmony singing to youths in our middle and high schools. This type of singing is more than 100 years old and enjoyed by people as much today as it was back then. It’s up to us to help future generations keep this music alive.”
