Westmoore Crowned Champions

Westmoore grabbed a quick 4-0 lead and then held on to defeat Robbins 5-3 in the finals of the county 13-14 girls’ softball tournament finals held recently at Hillcrest Park.

Westmoore scored four runs in the top of the first inning, combining four walks and two hits into its markers.

Christi Hussey led off for Westmoore, reaching on a walk. Jehnna Myrick also reached on a walk before Bianca Alsobrook delivered a single. Megan Smith also reached on a walk, as did Addie Gibbons. Kayly Brown collected the second hit of the inning for Westmoore with a double.

Hussey, Myrick, Alsobrook and Smith would score the four runs for Westmoore.

In the bottom of the inning, Robbins’ leadoff batter Elyssa Vest reached on a walk, but would eventually be retired trying to score, as Westmoore escaped the inning without giving up a run.

Westmoore failed to scratch in the top of the second, but Robbins would push across one run.

Robbins run was provided by Emily Brewer. Robbins would eventually get Jessica McLeod on third and Lori Sanders on second, but could not score another run in the inning.

Westmoore would score its final run of the game in the top of the third inning. After the first two batters were retired, Smith reached on a walk, eventually coming around to score. Westmoore would threaten by loading the bases, but failed to push across another run.

Robbins went down one, two, three in the bottom of the third and fourth before finally breaking through for another tally in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the score 5-2. Leadoff batter Sanders reached on a walk, eventually coming around to score. The second batter, Shelby Maness, walked, advancing as far as third, but Westmoore pitcher Alsobrook got the last three outs on strikeouts.

After holding Westmoore scoreless over the last four innings, Robbins made one last rally in the bottom of the seventh.

Brewer led off with a walk, but was eventually cut down at the plate trying to score. McLeod also reached on a walk and would come all the way around to score the final run of the game, leaving Westmoore on top 5-3 and holding the championship trophies.

Alsobrook picked up the win for Westmoore, picking up 12 strikeouts in the process.

Westmoore reached the finals by defeating Cameron in the first round and Carthage in the semifinals. Robbins had a first-round bye and defeated Vass/Highfalls in the semifinals.
