Carthage Police Make Arrests in Two Theft Cases
The Carthage Police Department has recovered almost $4,000 worth of stolen videos, and officers expect to recover others in the near future.
Carthage Police Chief Craig Goodnight said Walter Lee Evans has been arrested and charged with felonious possession of stolen goods and misdemeanor larceny. Evans, 29, lives at 113 Kelly Rd., Carthage.
Employees of Paradise Video Store at Carriage Oaks Shopping Center reported seeing a man walk through the store and leave “with a box-shaped indentation in his clothing,” Goodnight said. The store has had problems with shoplifting, he said.
Officer B.A. Davis and Lt. C.T. McKenzie investigated and obtained a search warrant for Evans’ home. Goodnight said they seized 66 videos bearing logos from Paradise Video, Video Hits and Sacks and other video rental businesses in the area.
Unsecured bond was set at $10,000, and Evans will be given a court hearing on Aug. 9.
Employee Charged: Carthage police have arrested an employee of a local supermarket for stealing tobacco products from the store and for providing fictitious information to a police officer.
Goodnight identified the suspect as 17-year-old Charles Eddie Thomas of 128 Thomas Drive. He works at the IGA store.
Goodnight said Thomas is accused of stealing several packs of cigarettes and packages of cigars. He said the property, valued at $55, has been returned to the store.
Officer K.L. Wilkes stopped a vehicle on the night of July 12 and found Thomas in possession of the tobacco products, Goodnight said. He said Thomas gave false information to Wilkes during the stop.
The IGA store management identified the cigarettes and cigars as store property, according to Goodnight.
Thomas was jailed under $2,000 secured bond. His court date is Aug. 23.
