RCC Students Donate Funds To Earthquake Relief Effort

Randolph Community College’s “Common Threads” student organization has raised $319 to help victims of last fall’s killer earthquake in Pakistan.

Common Threads is a weekly student discussion group focused on finding unity in diversity, which functions under the auspices of the Student Government Association. It began the Pakistan Earthquake Relief Fund in response to a Pakistani student’s plea for help.

The group decided to make the donation to Oxfam USA — an international development and relief agency committed to developing lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and social injustice.

Through long-term partnerships with poor communities, Oxfam fosters a relationship that is based on mutual respect and a willingness to innovate and share risks and has been on the ground in the earthquake- torn region of Pakistan since day one. In addition to the money raised from students, Common Threads donated $100 from their own Student Government budget to go to the Pakistani relief effort.

Chuck Egerton, Common Threads’ faculty adviser, worked closely with Morgan Mbeky, Student Government adviser and Brian Allred, Student Government public relations officer to collect and donate the funds.

“This was a great opportunity to help Common Threads raise money for such an important cause,” Allred said.

Donations to Oxfam can be made through the Web site at www.oxfamamerica.org.
