O’Neal Girls Keep Piling Up Victories

The O’Neal girls’ basketball team continued its outstanding play with a convincing 53-26 home win over Triad Athletic Conference foe Calvary Baptist from Winston-Salem.

After jumping out to a 17-6 first-quarter lead, the Falcons never looked back, extending their lead to 30-10 by halftime.

In winning its fourth consecutive conference game without a loss (13-2 overall), O’Neal continued to rely on strong defensive play.

Sophomore Margaret Cross and junior Kelsey Hukee led the Falcons’ defensive effort, combining to hold Calvary Baptist’s star, guard Emily Boone, to four points for the night. Senior Kat Davis led the team with four steals, while scoring eight points.

Cross had a game-high 16 points, while Kristen Stewart added 12 points and five rebounds for O’Neal. Freshman Syd McIlwain had a strong game underneath, leading the team with 11 rebounds while scoring four points.

Rounding out the scoring for the Falcons were Kitan Akinosho and Carey Avebook with four points each, while Hukee and Erin Menear had two points each. Kathryn Thornton had one point for O’Neal.

Akinosho, who played in a reserve role, also pulled down nine rebounds.

Calvary Baptist (6-9, 1-2) was led by Jennifer Beach with 14 points.

Next up for the Falcons is a home conference game against High Point Christian on Tuesday.
