A spokesman said each of the 179 families was given two large boxes full of canned and packaged foods plus poultry, eggs, baked goods, sweet potatoes, and other perishable items. The boxes were made up by members of the club’s families and distributed on Christmas Eve.
The Carthage Lions Club assisted with distribution in the Carthage area. Recipients with children in the family also had toys, books, stuffed animals, and clothes in additional boxes.
This activity has been a community project of the Vass Lions Club for over 50 years and has helped thousands of families during that time.
The coordinators for 2005 worked with local schools, churches, and other community organizations to identify the families and their particular needs. In addition to generous private citizens who made cash donations to help this cause, the Red Cross, Cypress House Head Start, Moore County Food Bank, Woodlake Country Club and the Piggly Wiggly in Vass were among the local organizations and businesses that helped the Club.
