Kiwanis Clubs Clarified
CONTRIBUTED
Did you know that there is more than one Kiwanis Club in Moore County? At one time this would not have been the case. In 1922, The Kiwanis Club of Aberdeen was founded, changing its name to The Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills in 1937 to make it countywide in scope.
As this club grew, it established additional Kiwanis Clubs in the communities of Pinehurst, Seven Lakes and, at one time, in Carthage, though that club no longer exists. Then a breakfast club, The Kiwanis Club in the Pines, was formed for those who wished to meet earlier in the day rather than for lunch, as most clubs do.
A few years ago the Sandhills Kiwanis Club helped form the Kiwanis Aktion Club under the guidance of member Wendy Russell who is the executive director of The Arc of Moore County.
In 2005, in keeping with this age of the computer, The Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills helped start the Kiwanis E-mail Club.
There are now six Kiwanis Clubs in Moore County.
“We were encouraged by Kiwanis International to start these additional clubs in order to offer more membership opportunities with different times and locations,” said Jim Dawson, a past president of the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills. “It also, allowed Kiwanis to better serve the community, especially the children of Moore County.”
