SANDHILLS BEST BETS: Jazz ’n January This Weekend

The 20th Jazz ’n January event, that will benefit the Arts Council of Moore County is set for tonight and tomorrow night at The Carolina in Pinehurst.

Performers include the Harry Allen-Joe Cohn Quartet, the Monty Alexander Trio, the Buck Creek Jazz Band and the Lars Edegran New Orleans Music Show.

The hotel’s Cardinal Room will serve as center stage for both performances, which start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $70 per person per show, or $120 for both shows. Door prizes will be given away to ticket holders; including a $1,000 shopping spree to nearby Lyne’s Furniture Gallery. Major proceeds will benefit the Arts Council of Moore County.

Film Continues

“Beyond the Sea” continues at the Sunrise Theater tonight through Monday. The film, directed by and starring Kevin Spacey, tells the story of entertainer Bobby Darin. Darin, a popular singer during the early 1960s, died at the age of 37.

Fund-Raiser

The O'Neal School presents “An Evening in Provence'” on Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Fair Barn in Pinehurst. A silent auction begins at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 8 p.m. Tickets are $100. Call 692-6920, ext. 128 or 129, for more information.

Travel Series

Kiwanis Club of the Pines and Sandhills Community College announce a Travel and Adventure Series presentation of “Bali and the Spice Islands” on Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Owens Auditorium at SCC in Pinehurst. Tickets are $6. Call 215-5864 for more information.

Cut-a-Thon

Moore County salon professionals will hold a Cut-a-Thon Monday, Jan. 31, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to benefit the Red Cross Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund. A shampoo and haircut is $20. For appointments, call Jason Faulkner or Billie Ertter at 246-2887.

Artists, Crafters Needed

Artists and crafters are invited to submit applications for a booth at Southern Pines’ annual Springfest on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The one-day festival draws an estimated attendance of 8,000 to 10,000 people.
