Mustangs Earn Split With West Davidson

By George Lawther: Special to The Pilot

North Moore returned to Yadkin Valley Conference play with a 72-56 win over visiting West Davidson in boys’ basketball action Tuesday.

Over the holiday break, the Mustangs, a 1-A school, participated in an Asheboro tournament where they went 1-2 against higher classification schools.

“For some reason we seem to start slow,” said Mustang coach Chris Coble. “This was a good win for us tonight, and we’ve beaten three conference teams now. If we can play the kind of basketball we’re capable of playing, we should do pretty well this season.”

West Davidson, led by center Kenan Yarboro, who scored seven of his 19 points in the first quarter, led by a score of 17-13 at the end of the first period.

The two teams played evenly through the second quarter, but three successive field goals by Dalewyn Spinks, Willis Barrett and C. T. Montjoy put the Mustangs up by three points, 28-25 at the half.

The two teams battled back-and-forth in the third quarter, the lead changed hand six times during the quarter. West Davidson took the lead, 36-35 with about three minutes remaining to be played in the quarter on a basket by Kellan Rives, but the Mustangs scored 10 unanswered points at the end of the period to lead by a score of 45-36.

North Moore outscored West Davidson 27-20 in the final period, including seven of eight from the foul line in the closing minutes to win by a margin of 16 points.
