It is with a deep sense of loss that the community will salute farewell to one of its icons. The “Leader of the Band” has laid down his baton. James C. Hasty, fondly known as “Cap Hasty” passed away Saturday.

The son of the second mayor of the incorporated town of West Southern Pines, “Cap Hasty” made his mark upon not just the community, but this entire area. He was the first African-American bandmaster in the southeastern region of the North Carolina Department of Education. His bands played at school functions throughout the region, primarily because it was the only African-American school with a band.

He also had a jazz band, manned by students, which entertained for decades in this area. In addition to his mastery of music in the schools, he taught math and science, drove the activity bus for athletic teams. Although he had specific rules of discipline. He was quick to laugh and always ready to give sound advice. He provided his charges with immeasurably wonderful memories.

“Cap Hasty” had also served as organist for both Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church and First Missionary Baptist Church. It has been often said, “The good one does lives long after them.” Well, there can never be memories of West Southern Pines without a moment of awed respect for its beloved bandmaster, “Cap” James C. Hasty.

Just a reminder that the Moore County Chapter of N.A.A.C.P. meets at Trinity A.M.E. Zion on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. The West Southern Pines Civic Club meets on the fourth Monday at Simon Funeral Home at 7 p.m.
