“Foot Care Self-Help” presented by Dr. Phillip E. Ward is Monday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. at the West End Diner’s Club, 149 Von Cannon Dr., West End. Dicussion topics include the relationship of diabetes and its effect on the feet; the structure of the foot with emphasis on the cause and treatment of common foot deformaties including fungal nails, bunions, hammertoes, corns and heel pain as well as foot care, self-help tips. Ends with question-and-answer session.
Quilling Class
The Moore County Quilling Club meets the third Thursday of each month. Previous quilling classes at the Moore County Department of Aging have prompted the desire for regular meetings to share ideas, exchange patterns and quill together.
Quilling is the art of rolling and shaping narrow strips of paper and arranging them to form designs. Use your creativity to make shadow boxes, gift cards, place cards, ornaments and more.
The group meets on Thursday, Jan. 16 for a special Valentine quilling project and Thursday, Feb. 20 for Spring projects. Club meets at the Department of Aging Office, 302 Monroe St., Carthage at 1:30 p.m. for new participants and 2 p.m. for quilling veterans. A fee of $5 for supplies is charged. Woodburning Class
Pyrography 101 will take place on Thursday, Feb. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. with Millard Welch and Bill Andrews at the Department of Aging office, Carthage. The cost is $12 and includes a woodburning pen and all materials. Observers welcome.
Information Session
The N.C. Assistive Technology Program, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, will present a free information session about various assistive technology on Thursday, Feb. 13 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Agricultural Center, 707 Pinehurst St., Carthage. Registraion by phone is encouraged. Open to caregivers, social workers, service providers, nurses and the general public. Includes such topics as mobility aids, speech aids, blind or low vision assistant devices and listening aids for the deaf or hard of hearing.
Volunteer Respite Caregiver Training
A 10-hour training class designed to enable volunters to help provide a break to those providing full-time care for a loved one is Feb. 26 and Feb. 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. Topics to be covered include aspects of respite care, volunteer responsiblitlies, characteristics of Alzheimer’s Disesase, the definition of normal aging and community resources that are available. Scam Jam
Together with the AARP, the Department of Aging will present an educational set of presenatations designed to familiarize consumers with the kinds of scams and frauds making the rounds today. ScamJam will take place on March 7. Attendees will leave with a heightened sense of awareness and empowerment that will reduce the possibility of victimization in their lives.
