O’Neal Wins Wachovia Boys’ and Girls’ Cups

The O’Neal School has received the Wachovia Cup and the Wachovia Boys’ and Girls’ Conference Cups.

The awards were presented by Susan Watkins, assistant vice president for the Southern Pines Wachovia Branch, at the O’Neal Upper School meeting on Jan. 22.

The Wachovia Cup program for North Carolina Independent Schools, which is sponsored in conjunction with the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) and Wachovia Bank, was begun in 1981, and presents Wachovia Cups annually to schools in two classifications of the NCISAA.

The award, a distinctive, high-quality silver cup, becomes the property of the winning school each year.

The winners of the Wachovia Cup award are determined by a point system based on performance in state championship events and regular season participation.

The NCISSA determines which sports are sanctioned each year, and schools earn five points for each sanctioned sport in which they participate during the regular season. All schools which finish in the top-eight positions (plus any ties) in a state championship event receive Wachovia Cup points.

In playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wachovia Cup points are awarded based on the school’s standing against other schools in its own classification.

The Wachovia Conference Cup program is designed to recognize high schools that have the best overall interscholastic sports program for both boys and girls in their conferences.

The Wachovia Conference Cup program was begun in the 1980-81 school year as a companion to the Wachovia Cup program.

In Wachovia Conference Cup competition, points are awarded for participation on boys and girls sports in which the conference recognizes team champions. Points are also given for the school’s team standings in the various sports.
