Stop Pretending
My, my! According to the Rev. Robert Jones (Public Speaking, Jan. 22), Saralou Caliri must be careful because the president may be listening. Not only that the president is eavesdropping into the lives of Cindy Sheehan, Michael Moore, Molly Ivins, Arianna Huffington “and anyone else who may be a threat to their (the administration’s) imperial ambitions.”
But, under the NSA guidelines, they would have to be speaking on an international call to a person overseas suspected of terrorism or terrorist connections. This is not domestic eavesdropping from you to your aunt, for instance. And if these people are talking to what might be a terrorist connection, why shouldn’t the government know? Perhaps that’s why a majority of Americans are not and are unlikely to become “outraged.”
Then Mr. Jones tells us that Martin Luther King, under today’s laws, could be sent to Gitmo. How come you didn’t point out J. Edgar Hoover’s wiretaps on MLK? Domestic eavesdropping! Was it because it was approved by your liberal hero Robert Kennedy?
Tsk, Tsk. Stop pretending these NSA wiretaps are domestic eavesdropping just to further your own political viewpoint.
