N.C. Zoo Needs Volunteers

See the North Carolina Zoo in a way that most visitors don’t get to see the park — as a volunteer.

Volunteer opportunities exist for the young and the young at heart, who will provide the zoo with valuable services and talents in the following areas:

  • Exhibit interpreter volunteers use the zoo’s living collection to increase visitor awareness of conservation issues and the effects of human actions on the environment.

  • Wildlife rehab volunteers provide care for injured or orphaned native wildlife to help return them to their natural habitat.

  • Gardeners help plan, plant, maintain and harvest the zoo’s plant collection

  • Zoo host volunteers assist visitors by providing information on how best to see the zoo, use the transportation system and find necessary services.

Although most volunteer positions require the participants to be at least 18 years old, the Wildlife Rehab Center does offer some opportunities to youths, ages 12 to 15, who volunteer with a parent volunteer. Parental consent is required for anyone 16-18 years old.

Volunteers can attend one of two mandatory training secessions on either Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. or Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the zoo’s W. David Stedman Education Center.

To learn more about the zoo’s volunteer program and additional opportunities, visit www.nczoo.org/volunteer on the Web for a volunteer application or contact Toy Jarrett at (336) 879-7712.
