Students were given 100 balloons in a variety of colors and sizes.
The first thing students learned about was static electricity. Students had balloons magically stuck to their arms, legs and hair.
They were also asked how to determine the number of balloons in the classroom.
The students decided to group them in sets of 10. Despite a popped balloon or two, the class ended up with 106.
Students then decided to sort the balloons by color.
Everyone was responsible for gathering a color and keeping the wayward balloons contained.
They discovered that most of the balloons were blue. They also learned that green had the fewest balloons.
The students then used a Venn diagram to see who liked which colors. The colors red, blue and green won in combination.
Students also measured balloons to see who had the biggest and smallest.
They discovered that a ruler was not a good tool of choice and opted for a tape measure. Students wanted to weigh the balloons, but realized it would be difficult to weigh the air.
After finishing with the balloons, the students found out that a box of Apple Jacks has 1,370 loops. They learned that one cup held about 120 pieces and that grouping the cereal in sets of 10 was an easier way to count. Students also discovered there were more orange pieces than green pieces in their boxes.
The students made homemade pizzas for their lunch and topped the day off with cake and ice cream.
