It’s hard to understand the reasoning behind such a mean gesture by the Board of Commissioners. The mistake may not have been completely theirs, but it certainly wasn’t the fault of the retirees who, in good faith, believed they were entitled to a benefit that had been promised. Corporations with a conscience would have advised the retirees in plenty of time for them to arrange for other drug coverage. Retrieving $15,000 is neither civil nor moral. Using the pretense of protecting the taxpayers’ money is a sham. Most taxpayers would gladly let this matter drop.
Next, we learn that the commissioners have asked the Moore County Resources for Seniors to hand over money that was raised for a senior center. The Resources group was formed to raise funds that could be given tax receipts as an added incentive to donors. Few, if any, of those donors would want their funds dropped into the black hole that is the county treasury, guarded by hungry mastiffs.
The 3-2 majority of the commissioners has been wrong about Mike Griffin, wrong about dunning retirees, wrong about the location for the senior center and now wrong about wanting senior center funds to be given to them.
In most places, three strikes means you’re out. They have four strikes. There’s still time to redeem themselves. It’s time to admit to the error of their ways and give us a county of which we can be proud.
