New Partnerships Emerge During Pinehurst Dressage

BY SUE SMITHSON: Equestrian Correspondent

The second of the Pinehurst Dressage Schooling Show series here Feb. 13 at the Harness Track attracted newcomers to the sport and new partnerships for veterans.

Amy Ramsdell of Carthage, riding for owner Nancy Piscopo of McLendon Hills, put a lock on the lower-level series championship with Dedericka II.

The petite Hannoverian mare earned an impressive 80.5 percent in her second outing under the training of Linda Hoover of West End.

“It was a nice improvement from her first test, and also from the last show,” said Ramsdell. “I felt that my riding was steadier. If I ride her right, she’s right there.”

Ramsdell has been working with the mare since November. “I really appreciate everyone’s help and support. It’s great having the opportunity to show this horse.”

Ramsdell and Dedericka were edged out of first place in the intro B test by Debby Fulks of Vass and her new 4-year-old gelding Odin in the horse’s debut.

Nan Pieroni of Seven Lakes was a show stopper with her new mount Juneau.

The horse’s amazing athletic abilities attracted a crowd for their debut in the FEI (international) class.

Eventers

Carthage trainer Caroline Dowd posted the highest score (69.5 percent) in the most difficult event test (Advanced C) with her Raw Deal. Chris Padgett of Southern Pines topped the largest class, novice C open, with Cosy Lathrop’s Thoroughbred gelding Fast Activation.

Juniors

Junior riders Stephanie Gibson of Vass and Andrew Diemer of Raeford are vying for the series championship in the event division. True to form, they both won a class Sunday. Gibson rides her large pony Risky Business, and Diemer is piloting a new Thoroughbred gelding Bossa Nova.

Diana Simpson of Southern Pines, and her new Dutch mare In Fashion won their junior class in their dressage debut at training level.

Briana Owen, 18, of Vass has successfully re-trained her eventer Sutterby Good to the white rectangle to win the upper-level test of choice.
