Tsunami Relief Fund To Benefit

CONTRIBUTED

“Be Mine!” That’s what downtown Southern Pines retailer Mary Contrary is saying now through Valentine’s Day. “Be my guest,” that is.

In order to thank the community for its loyalty and support, Mary Contrary is inviting customers and community members to stop by the shop for a hot cup of cider between now and Valentine’s Day. But, since there’s more on everyone’s minds this Valentine’s Day than traditional hearts, candy and flowers, Mary Contrary is rallying to make a difference, asking customers to join in to support a greater cause — to help raise money to aid victims of the tsunami.

Mary Contrary will be dishing out fresh, steaming cups of cider and holiday cookies between now and Valentine’s Day, while collecting donations to help comfort victims on the other side of the globe. Donations of any size will be accepted and appreciated, and disbursed through a locally-initiated organization — “Brothers of the Poor: Tsunami Aid to Eastern Sri Lanka” (Tax ID #26-0103108).

“We wouldn’t be here today without our customers, so it seems only fitting that we should take every opportunity we can to show our great appreciation,” said Mary Wasse, Mary Contrary owner. “But this year, the holiday is overshadowed by a tragic sadness — so we wanted to give back to our customers and everyone out there who has been affected by offering an outlet for giving.”

Brothers of the Poor was started by native Sri Lankan and Vass resident Pius Gabriel, and 100 percent of all donated funds go directly to the orphans and refugees of eastern Sri Lanka. Donations will enable the orphans to survive this difficult time and grow in a better environment, while helping families and communities rebuild. Brothers of the Poor will give immediate assistance to the residents of the orphanages and refugee camps, with the long-term goal of resettling these survivors through the building of new houses and community infrastructure.

“Together, we can make a difference. This community has proven that to me through their strong support and devotion to my shop,” said Wasse. “And I know this community won’t be timid about showing their support to make a difference to the tsunami victims.”

Mary Contrary, a treasure trove of unique gifts and furnishings for the home, garden and giving, was established in 2002. For more information, call Wasse at 910-692-5338.
