Fairway Notebook: Birdies Play Best Ball

Pinehurst: The Birdies played a game using one best ball and throwing out one hole on the front and back on Course No. 2 on Feb. 1, with 58 players.

Class AA/BB — Cindy Motter, Mary Green, Shirley Potter and Therese Witczak were first with a 54 in a match of cards with Rita Clayton, Linda Querec, Irene Corbin and Kay McGowan; and Olive Muiter, Susan Marentette, Margaret Van Riper and Jean Sunstrom. Linda Bond, Katie McCarthy, Sheryl Robinson and Chris Mastaler were fourth with a 55 in a match of cards.

Class CC/DD — June Eichele, Barbara Raugh, Jan Polisoto amd Johnnie Johnston, 52; Miyuki Kallagis, Andrea Wells, Audrae Thibodeau and Eileen Lowrie, 54; Marilyn Gordon, Glenna Pope, Terry Rutkowski and Jo Rolman, 56; and Regina Stoddard, Shirley Kronbach, Jan Aryuseavage and Rita Rocchi, 57.

Rita Clayton and Trish Christina made birdies.

The Silver Foils played a tournament using one best ball of the foursome Tuesday, Feb. 1. Anne McKenzie, Nancy Geddes, Jackie Meyer and Jane Smith won with a 62.

Dee Bilodeau, Margaret Foyston, Jean Underwood and Phyllis Watston came in second with a 63. Gerri LoFrese, Jean McMahon and Marge Swinarton were third with a 65.

The Women’s Golf Association played a game using two best balls on red flags and one best ball on white and yellow flags Feb. 4 on Course No. 1.

Myrna Floyd, Gerri Lofrese, Elizabeth Morgan and Ilse Roberts were first with a 79.

Margaret Cropley, Miyuki Kallagis, Regina Stoddard and Audrae Thibodeau were second with an 82. Sandy Edens, Jackie Meyer, Cindy Motter and Marilyn Thomas were third with an 83. Silvia Bisbe, Josie Bunting Maggie Langley and Caroline Young were fourth in a match of cards Carol Alexander, Joyce Harter, Jane Lee and Jacque Weston.

Charlotte Cable, Maragret Foyston, Donna Tanner and Joan Williams were sixth with an 86. Janie Dixon, Marilyn Gordon, Patti O’Day and Joan Sponik were seventh with an 87.

Knollwood: The Sandblasters played a tournament using two best balls of the foursome Feb. 1, with 17 players braving the cold weather. Art Gula, Bill Davis, Don Green and Dick Kelley won with a 55.

Art Campbell, dean Holzgraf, Joe Reilly and a blind draw were second with a 58. John Mannion, Paul Sanger, Walt Sheytt were third with a 61 in a match of cards.

Wallace Gourley was low gross at 39. Dean Holzgraf was low net with a 30.

Paul Sanger made a birdie on No. 1, Art Gula on No. 5, Ron Flock on No. 6, Jack Henderson on No. 3 and Walt Lang on No. 9.

Seven Lakes: The Women’s Golf Association played its Cordial Cup tournament Feb. 1, with Marge Blake winning the cup with a net score of 68 in a one-hole play off with Vi Self.

First flight — Grae Starwald, 72; Bev Needler, 73; and Lois Schliepsiek and June Hale tied at 75.

Second Flight — Vi Self, 68; Betty Larson, 70; and Carole Barnard, with third with 72.

Whispering Woods: The Men's Golf Association played a captain's choice tournament Feb. 2.

Rich Moran, Phil Guzzo, Charlie DiLaura and Joe Pepe won.

There was a three-way tie for second place between the teams of Bill Anderson, Joe Thomas and Ray Libbey; Don Stuchel, Bill Woodruff, Bud Henty and Clyde Hightower; and Tom Rittenshouse, Smoke Wood, Dick Colegrove and Claude Bandy.
