CLUB BRIEFS

AARP

AARP Chapter No. 2564 will meet on Tuesday, Feb 17 at 10 a.m. at the Community Congregational Church 141 N. Bennett St. Southern Pines. The guest speaker will be David Woronoff, publisher of The Pilot.

AARP meets at the church every third Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m.

Women of Pines

The Women of the Pines will meet on Wednesday, Feb 18 at Pinehurst Members Club.

Guest speaker Cecilia Grimes is an author, speaker, and certified etiquette and protocol conultant. Cecilia has an undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University and a master’s from Duke.

Gem Society

The Sandhills Gem and Mineral Society is planning its first field trip of 2004. Members are asked to meet at Lowes Food, Olmsted Village, Hwy. 5 & 211, at 9:30 a.m.. on Saturday, Feb. 21 (weather permitting).

“Bring sturdy shoes, safety glasses, gloves, rock hammer or pry bar and something to put your treasures in,” said a spokesman.

Highland Trails Women

The Highland Trails Women’s Club will meet on Thursday, Feb 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Pat Hoffman, 211 Stornoway Drive in Highland Trails.

Judy Estridge, vice president in charge of public relations and security with First Bank, will present the program for the evening. She will cover two areas of interest to consumers, the first being identity theft and the second being travel programs that are available through First Bank.

All women who are residents of Highland Trails are encouraged to attend this meeting to learn more about protecting themselves from identity theft, to hear about available travel programs, and to visit with neighbors.

MOAA

The Sandhills Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will meet at the Pinehurst Members Club on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 11:30 a.m. for registration and noon for lunch.

Following lunch, guest speakers are Lt. Colonel David Bromwell, USAF, and Capt. Kim Campbell, USAF, both A-10 pilots. Although the A-10 Campbell was flying in Iraq on a mission over Baghdad was heavily damaged, she was able to fly back to her base and land safely, meaning she walked away after landing.

Campbell has been widely featured by the national press. She still travels around the country and is in great demand as a speaker. Bromwell serves as an advance agent supporting travel of the president and vice president. He will share vignettes of the interesting demands of the President and his official party as they travel around the United States and the world.

Men’s Garden Club

The Men’s Garden Club of Southern Pines will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Civic Club, on the corner of Ashe Street and Pennsylvania Ave. in Southern Pines.

The speaker will be Mirilda Seimers, who has established a beautiful garden at her home in Pinehurst. She was a previous resident of Southern Pines. She will talk about the success and tribulations involved in establishing and maintaining her garden. Visitors and guests and prospective members are more than welcome to attend.

Christian Women

On Thursday, Feb. 19 at noon, Sandhills CWC is hosting a luncheon featuring Kristina Najera of HomeChoice Network. The musical guests are Suzanne and Randy Clendenin and our guest speaker is Shirley Ludwig of Cary.

For anyone who has found themselves home-bound and unable to do some things, HomeChoice Network is the choice for you. Kristina Najera will inform us of services available for anyone who needs a little help. Their services are valuable to you or your family or friends, whether a new mother, recovering from surgery or just need a little more help.

Musical guests, Suzanne and Randy Clendenin, will entertain with a vocal performance.

The guest speaker, Shirley Ludwig of Cary, tells of how she cared for her aging parents.

All Sandhills women and their guests are welcome to attend the luncheon held at the National Golf Club in Pinehurst from noon to 1:30 p.m.

“Be sure to let us know if you will taking advantage of our free nursery for preschool and home-schooled children,” said a spokesman.

The cost of the luncheon is $13, all-inclusive. A courtesy call is requested no later than Tuesday, Feb. 17, to cancel. Sandhills CWC is a non-member, non-dues club.

KOP

Herman Thompson was the member-speaker at the Kiwanis of the Pines Jan. 29 when the speaker scheduled to show was absent. Thompson gave his humerous take of many happenings. David Johnson was program chairman.

Magnolia Branch

The first meeting of the Magnolia branch of the Pinehurst Garden club was held at Fran Fredricks on Wednesday, Jan. 21.

Thoughts of spring were on everyone’s mind as the guest speaker Joe Granato of Star Ridge Aquatics, talked about water gardening. He brought with him floating islands, various new plants that are now on the market, and a myriad of ideas for creating, installing, and maintaining a pond or water feature. Granato indicated that water gardening is the fastest growing sector in the green industry. He is a graduate of Sandhills Community College and his family owned business, in Carthage, is in its 12th season of operation.

Following the program was a business meeting. Plans for the annual spring plant sale, on April 17, were discussed. Members signed up to sell plants and work at the sale. The Pinehurst Garden Club spring plant sale is the club’s primary fund raiser for community projects. Impatiens, vinca, begonias, and geraniums can be pre-ordered through club members. The day of the sale a variety of hanging baskets, herbs, and other annuals will be offered. Garden club members will be accepting plant orders now until the first part of April.
