AARP Begins Tax Aide Program at Various Locations

Free tax assistance and electronic filing will be available to area low-to-moderate income taxpayers again this year as part of the AARP Tax Aide program starting Feb. 2 and continuing through April 14.

This year features a partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills to utilize the Walker and Katie Morris Technology Center located at the new Southern Pines Recreation Center on Memorial Park Court where the old fire station was. There is plenty of free parking near the building.

With the opening of this new location, comes the closing of several previous sites.

About 30 area volunteers have been busy studying the 2003 tax materials and taking the IRS test to certify them as qualified to work with the program.

If you need help in preparing your taxes, or if you have questions, please stop in at one of these locations to make an appointment. (Southern Pines Library does not take appointments.)

  • Carthage: Centura Bank (Monroe St.) Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Seven Lakes: First 1 Bank (Rt. 211) Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon

  • Southern Pines: Library, Tuesday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills, Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Last year, this program helped almost 800 Moore County residents with their taxes, filing over 1,400 Federal and State tax returns. Free electronic filing is available at all locations but the Library.
