Schools Set Make-Up Days

By Abby Whitaker: Staff Writer

Moore County public school employees and students can once again get out their calendars and prepare to make changes to their spring schedules.

School was closed for students and staff Monday due to dangerous road conditions caused by sleet and freezing rain. Schools remained closed Tuesday for students, but it was an optional teacher work day, with a two-hour delay. Monday was not counted in the 220 days of employment for staff.

“We have to have a 220-day calendar,” Deputy Superintendent Larry Upchurch said. “February 17 will not be counted against 10-month employees. To make up for that day, we’re going to have to add that day on at the end of the school year.”

To make up for the missed days, students and staff will report to school Wednesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 29. Originally, these two days were school-designated days.

June 3 will be added to the calendar as a school-designated day for 10-month employees. This will complete the 220-day calendar.

The last day for students will now be May 29. It was previously May 23.

“At this point, we will still have spring holiday and Easter break as planned,” Upchurch said.

Spring holiday is March 10-14. Easter break is April 18 and 21.
